The Newcastle United defender has been linked with Stoke City but he is vital for the Magpies.
According to a recent report from the Chronicle, Stoke City are considering a summer swoop for Newcastle United left-back Paul Dummett, but Magpies manager Rafa Benitez would be crazy to sanction a move for the 25-year-old.
Summer departures mean Newcastle are already short in that position and while they could strengthen with new additions, they will need considerable strength in depth as they bid to not only stay in the Premier League next season but challenge in the top half of the table.
With Benitez at the helm, Newcastle should have the realistic aim of challenging for European football in the next few years, and that means ensuring they have two or three players for every position.
Dummett is not every Newcastle fan’s cup of tea but he was integral to their Championship-winning campaign, featuring 46 times in all competitions and missing just one league game over the entire season.
As if that was not enough, Dummett almost invariably finished every match that he started, and Newcastle need players who are going to be available week in, week out.
The 25-year-old would be the first to admit that injuries can strike at any time, and Benitez must ensure he has sufficient cover all over the field.
He is also arguably reaching his peak, and having come through the youth ranks at St. James’ Park his understanding of the club’s ethos will be vital as they bid to get back to their best.
There are a few Newcastle players who should be shown the door this summer, but Dummett is not one of them.
