According to The Sun, Newcastle United are interested in signing Pepe Reina from Napoli in the summer transfer window.

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez himself has been coy about the possibility of signing the former Liverpool goalkeeper, telling The Sun: “Would I take him to Newcastle if he left?

“I respect Napoli — as that’s where he is — and our club has a lot of goalkeepers who are doing well. We need to be calm, we’ll talk to the club and decide on our targets.”

Reina may be 34 years of age, but the Spaniard remains one of the best goalkeepers in the world and would be a stunning signing for the Magpies in the summer transfer window.

Newcastle would make a massive statement of intent if they recruit a player who has played for clubs like Barcelona, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Napoli.

Benitez worked with the Spain international goalkeeper at Liverpool and Napoli, and the former Real Madrid head coach knows all about the 34-year-old.

The Magpies will be aiming to push for a top-10 finish in the Premier League next season, and signing a player of Reina’s quality and calibre is only going to make them stronger contenders.

True, Newcastle have good goalkeepers who are going to get better in the coming years, but it would not be wise of the Premier League outfit to pass the chance of signing Reina.
