Newcastle will try to sell Mitrovic in January – report

Aleksander Mitrovic is currently on the fringes of the Newcastle squad under Rafa Benitez.

Rafa Benitez will try to offload Newcastle United striker Aleksander Mitrovic in January after failing to do so in either 2017 transfer window, according to the Evening Chronicle.

The 23-year-old has been afforded just three appearances in all competitions by Newcastle boss Benitez, starting only one of those in the EFL Cup against Nottingham Forest.

Former Anderlecht striker Mitrovic is third choice in the pecking order at St. James’ Park, with summer signing Joselu currently Benitez’s go-to striker. Dwight Gayle remains back-up after recovering from a calf injury.

Now, it is believed that the Toon will look to offload Mitrovic in the January transfer window in two months’ time, after Newcastle failed to move him on in the last winter window and this summer.

However, the report claims that Newcastle would need a replacement in first if they were to sell the Serbia international, and that could prove a stumbling block in cashing in on Mitrovic with the Toon struggling to sign players this summer.

Joining Newcastle in July 2015, Mitrovic has made 68 appearances for the Magpies in all competitions, scoring at a ratio of one every four games with 17 strikes.

It remains to be seen how much Newcastle would charge for their out-of-favour forward, who has a contract on Tyneside until the summer of 2020.
