Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Miguel Almiron.
Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez will be hoping to bring in new signings in the January transfer window, and one top target appears to be emerging in Miguel Almiron.
The Atlanta United star – who has notched 12 goals and 13 assists in 32 MLS games this season – is expected to move on in January, with a switch to the Premier League strongly rumoured.
Newcastle appear to have entered themselves in to the race for Almiron’s signature, with agent Daniel Campos telling Futbol a lo Grande that he was at St James’ Park on Saturday to accelerate those rumours of a move to Tyneside for his Paraguayan client.
Now, The Chronicle report that Newcastle have been watching Almiron for two years ahead of making a move, having been impressed with the former Lanus playmaker – but how have they not moved by now?
Almiron has been a star for some time now, and whilst Newcastle have been impressed for two years, they seemingly haven’t decided to make a move until now, and their dallying may just cost them.
The Chronicle note that Tottenham Hotspur are also considering a move to sign Almiron in January, and if the playmaker heads to North London instead of the North East, then Newcastle really will only have themselves to blame.
Spurs have Champions League football to offer as well as playing in a brand new stadium, and they should be able to offer Almiron a greater package than Newcastle can, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men potentially more enticing than a move to St James’ Park.
That would leave Newcastle kicking themselves for not moving for Almiron sooner given that he has been on their radar for so long, and would leave fans frustrated at Newcastle’s often slow approach to the transfer market.
