Newcastle wanted Kevin Gameiro in 2011 and 2015; Rafa Benitez cannot allow him to now move elsewhere

Newcastle United have been linked with Kevin Gameiro on a couple of occasions in recent years, so should they now make a fresh move?

With Newcastle seemingly not enjoying the kind of transfer window that Rafa Benitez would have liked, you would imagine that January could be a potentially busy month for the Magpies, especially if they go off the boil in the coming months after their mixed start to the new season.

With the club’s lack of activity in the window perhaps down to have a smaller budget, Benitez may have to look for potential bargains when the window reopens – but luckily, it appears that one potential bargain may be there for the taking.

According to the Daily Mirror, Atletico Madrid are ready to let Kevin Gameiro leave in January after they completed a deal to bring Diego Costa back to the club.

The Mirror suggests that Atleti could sanction a permanent deal for Gameiro – who is attracting Everton’s interest – for a price of around £20 million, but would also be willing to listen to loan bids for the 30-year-old.

With that in mind, the Magpies would surely be foolish to not make a loan bid for the Frenchman in the hope that his asking price puts off other teams making a bid.

Newcastle were previously linked with Gameiro in 2011, as reported by the Daily Mail, and then again four years later, as reported by the Daily Mirror, so it seems incredibly unlikely that news of his availability will not have attracted some attention from St James’ Park.

And with Benitez’s men struggling for goals, especially from their strikers – centre-back Jamaal Lascelles remains their top goalscorer with two strikes to his name – the Spaniard would surely be wise to have a look at Gameiro.

The chance to land a player of his calibre and quality without depleting the transfer budget too significantly – provided that they sign him on loan – does not come around too often, and when that player has been on the club’s radar on numerous occasions in the past, it seems like the perfect opportunity for Newcastle.
