Newcastle United and Watford are reportedly eyeing a move for Bologna hitman Mattia Destro and have contacted the Serie A club over his availability, but would he be the perfect fit at West Ham United?
Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb claim Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is ready to offer £8.9million, plus £1.8million in bonuses, to sign the 26-year-old forward who dons the number 10 shirt at Serie A outfit Bologna.
Watford are said to be keen too, in what would be a summer move for the eight-time Italy international if any club were to land the former Roma, AC Milan and Inter Milan journeyman.
But surely West Ham would be the perfect fit for Destro, with the Hammers known for their desire to sign big-name players as well as their need to land a striker?
TuttoMercatoWeb also reported back in 2015 that the Hammers were keeping tabs on Destro, who is a proven marksman in the top tier of Italian football with a ratio of one goal every three games – he has score 65 in 194 outings.
Breaking through the ranks as a youngster in Serie A, Destro has failed to live up to the hype of becoming one of the world’s best centre-forwards but he is still more than capable of scoring on a regular basis.
In a side struggling to find the back of the net on a regular basis – Bologna have managed just 29 strikes in 24 Serie A games – Destro has scored five goals in 19 league games as well as adding three assists.
He was left out of the starting line-up last weekend during the 2-1 loss to Inter Milan, with manager Roberto Donadoni choosing to overlook the striker and leaving him on the bench.
Perhaps becoming disillusioned at Bologna, West Ham should rival Newcastle and Watford and lure the striker to the London Stadium to finally end their search of a proven goalscorer.
