Newcastle are one of a number of English clubs looking to lure Barcelona attacker Memphis Depay back to the Premier League. Back in 2020, Bruno Guimaraes was full of praise for Depay – and could now link up with him.

Depay, 28, only joined Barcelona on a free transfer from Lyon last summer but has fallen down the pecking order. Ronald Koeman left, and in came Xavi – as did some new signings, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyamg.

It has seen the Netherlands star fail to start a La Liga match since December 4 and while injury has prevented him – so has Xavi. Indeed, he has made substitute appearances in each of Barcelona’s last five La Liga matches.

Super Deporte report that Newcastle – along with Everton and Arsenal – have opened talks to sign Depay, by making an enquiry. Newcastle star Bruno is a big fan of Depay, having played alongside him at Lyon.

“He is a player that opponents do not like to face, he scares them. With us, he is very respected, he is our captain, a very important player. To be able to count on him, it’s truly great,” Bruno said in 2020, as per GFFN.

Bruno on Depay: Would be a sensational signing for Newcastle

The two-year deal Depay signed at Barcelona was somewhat peculiar. It means that the attacker will enter the last 12 months of his Barca deal – allowing clubs to perhaps, nab Depay for a bargain fee this summer.

Given Barcelona signed him for nothing, it will be interesting to see the fee they want for Depay. But he would be a monumental signing, a real face for the Toon project. Whether he would join Newcastle, remains to be seen.
