Newcastle United want to sign Dimitri Oberlin, but should the Premier League side instead look at a player on the same books?

According to a report from The Sun, Newcastle are considering making a move for Basel loanee Dimitri Oberlin as Rafa Benitez looks to give his side the boost they need to get themselves out of trouble in the Premier League.

The Sun reports that Oberlin – who is on loan from Red Bull Salzburg – has been rated at £20 million, so Magpies fans may have high hopes that he may prove to be something special given that you would imagine that they will be spending an eye-watering amount when the window opens next month.

However, the 20-year-old has scored just three goals in 14 appearances in the Swiss top flight this year. And while the fact that he has started just six times means that his record is better than it would initially appear, and his age hints that he could prove to be something special in the future, Newcastle surely need a goalscorer who is going to hit the ground running in January.

Therefore, perhaps Benitez should consider a move for a striker who is also on Salzburg’s books, who is enjoying a hugely impressive season right now.

Moanes Dabour has been prolific for the Austrian side this term. He has scored 12 goals in 18 top flight appearances, and has scored three goals in six games in the Europa League.

That is arguably the kind of record that Newcastle should be looking at if they want to bolster their attacking ranks during next month’s window. And with the last player to move to the Premier League from Salzburg being Sadio Mane, it would perhaps be well worth the gamble for Newcastle to move for Dabour rather than target Oberlin.
