The Magpies got the better of promotion rivals Brighton 2-0 at St. James’ Park in the Championship.
Captain Jamaal Lascelles put Newcastle in the lead after just 15 minutes when he headed home from Matt Ritchie’s free kick.
Yoan Gouffran was unlucky not to double the advantage for Rafael Benitez’s side, as he saw his shot from 25 yards hit the Brighton crossbar.
Anthony Knockaert was denied by the frame of the Newcastle goal, and Brighton went down to 10 men due to the sending-off of Sam Baldock in the 54th minute.
Jonjo Shelvey curled in a free kick on 63 minutes to wrap up a comfortable win for Newcastle.
