Newcastle United’s sponsor’s, Fun 88’s, half-time tweet has backfired, after Sunderland ran out 4-0 winners in the Chekatrade Trophy last night.

Newcastle’s youngsters had held Sunderland to a 0-0 draw in the first half at the Stadium of Light yesterday and Fun 88 were seemingly all too keen to ridicule Jack Ross’ side.

The Newcastle shirt sponsor suggested that they hoped Netflix were filming the game, in reference to a documentary which has recently been broadcast on Sunderland, which went behind the scenes over their relegation season.

However, the Magpies were comprehensively beaten by Sunderland in the second period.

And Sunderland fans were quick to jump on the tweet, suggesting that Fun 88 were far too hasty.

Sunderland scored their goals against Newcastle through Charlie Wyke, Chris Maguire, Benji Kimpioka and an own-goal, as they picked up a comfortable victory in the end.

Even Sunderland boss Jack Ross admitted that the game could not be considered a proper derby match though, as Newcastle were only allowed to play their youngsters.

Sunderland are now into the quarter-finals of the competition, and just two wins away from Wembley.
