Should Leeds United capitalise on the uncertainty surrounding Karl Darlow’s future at Newcastle United?
Leeds United’s goalkeeping problems have been abated somewhat by Bailey Peacock-Farrell’s emergence in the first team.
The 21-year-old has forced veteran Andy Lonergan to settle for regular places on the bench, while the error-prone Felix Wiedwald has been exiled completely it seems, having failed to make Paul Heckingbottom’s squad in well over a month.
Wiedwald and Lonergan were brought in by Director of Football Victor Orta last summer as replacements for Marco Silvestri and Rob Green respectively, but both have proven poor signings – especially Wiedwald, who cost £500,000.
Peacock-Farrell certainly seems capable of keeping that number one shirt until the beginning of next season, but Leeds still need another excellent goalkeeper and one man who might appeal to the Whites is Newcastle United’s Karl Darlow.
According to The Chronicle, the 27-year-old, who earns around £15,000 per week [Silly Season], is refusing to sign a new contract with Newcastle until Rafael Benitez gives him guarantees about first-team football next season, which seems unlikely and therefore he could perhaps be tempted away this summer.
As good as Peacock-Farrell has been over the past 10 games, he is untested over the course of a full Championship season and Darlow – who led the Magpies to Premier League promotion this time last year – might be the smarter option for now.
