Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey looks set to be on the bench for Steve Bruce’s side at the weekend.

Jonjo Shelvey has told the Telegraph that he picked up an injury in Newcastle United training, but continued to play through the pain.

Shelvey has fallen under pressure at Newcastle, as his performances have been very inconsistent in recent seasons.

The central midfielder dropped out of Rafael Benitez’s starting plans, but Steve Bruce has offered him a second chance.

Shelvey’s initial displays this term have not earned much praise from Newcastle supporters.

But Shelvey has issued a fierce defence of himself, insisting that he is not a lazy player.

“I get labelled lazy, maybe because of my body language and I’m quite a laid-back character,” the £12 million (BBC Sport) man said.

“I just get called lazy. I wasn’t lazy out there against Leicester.

“My thigh started to hurt the other day in training. We were practising penalties and the same problem I had last week, where basically I played on one leg with my thigh. You couldn’t call me lazy out there

“At the end of the day, I’m the one that goes out there and trains every day as hard as I can.”

Unfortunately for Shelvey his desire to win over the doubters was not helped by his penalty miss for Newcastle in midweek.

Shelvey fluffed his lines from 12 yards, as Newcastle went out of the Carabao Cup against Leicester City.

The Magpies also put in their best performance of the season last weekend, as they beat Tottenham Hotspur, without Shelvey in their midfield.

It all means that the England international is likely to be on the bench tomorrow, when Newcastle take on Watford.
