Newcastle United’s Isaac Hayden was on the radar of Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer of 2018.
According to The Times, in July 2018, Newcastle’s Premier League rivals Brighton want to sign the 23-year-old former Arsenal prospect.
Nothing materialised, and the Englishman is still at Newcastle, who are aiming to stave off relegation to the Championship at the end of the season.
Hayden – who earns £22,000 per week as salary, according to Spotrac.com -has suggested that he would have moved to Brighton on a lower salary.
“It’s frustrating,” Hayden told The Times. “When people saw Brighton were interested, they assumed I must want more money.
“No. I would have taken a pay cut. It was exactly the same in January. The manager knows that. Everyone at the club knows my situation, my character.”
Summer exit?
In an extensive interview with The Times, Hayden explained the familial reasons for wanting to leave Newcastle and move down south.
The 23-year-old is very professional, and he has done his best when he has been called upon.
It would make sense for Newcastle to let go of Hayden in the summer of 2019 and allow him to move to a club of his choosing.
According to WhoScored, the 23-year-old has made 11 starts and four substitute appearances in the Premier League for Newcastle so far this season, scoring one goal and providing three assists in the process.
