Newcastle United face an uphill battle to sign Cenk Tosun.

The striker scored 24 goals last season as Besiktas won the Super Lig title, and after last night Newcastle face an even tougher task to convince him to join up in January.
Tosun led the line for Besiktas as they clinched a 2-0 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

Besiktas now sit three points clear at the top of Group G, five points ahead of last year’s semi-finalists Monaco, with Porto also trailing in their wake.
If Newcastle had any realistic hope of signing Tosun mid-season, then they would have needed Besiktas to crash out of the Champions League in the group stages.
Instead they appear strong candidates to reach the knockout rounds, continuing their involvement in the competition through to 2018.
While Tosun did not score last night, he appears to still be an unquestioned starter, and he has little need to leave the club.
If he did, it would need to be for a convincing reason. At present it does not appear as though Newcastle can put together a viable case to tempt him away.
