Newcastle United have seen their potential takeover fall through, meaning their summer business may now have to change.
The ideas of a big summer spending spree with high-profile managers and players being on the radar are now a thing of the past, with scaled-back plans now likely to be implemented.
Bargains may now be on Newcastle’s radar, but one player who won’t be heading to St James’ Park is Sheffield United defender Chris Basham.
The Blades confirmed on Saturday morning that Basham has signed a new contract, keeping him at Bramall Lane until 2022.
Basham, 32, has been a mainstay of Chris Wilder’s side this season, and has proven himself as Premier League defender again having last played in the top flight – albeit briefly – in the 2010-11 season.
The 6ft 3in ace has been so impressive that the Daily Mail claimed in July that Newcastle wanted to bring him back to the club.

Basham came up through the Newcastle ranks despite actually supporting bitter rivals Sunderland, but was released at 16 as his hopes of becoming a professional footballer took an early hit.
Basham has proven Newcastle wrong for letting him go, but his new deal now rules out the prospect of him heading back to the club some 16 years since they axed him – and he can now continue to be a key part of the Sheffield United side.
