The loaned-out Newcastle United striker Elias Sorensen played – and scored – for Carlisle’s reserves on Tuesday.

Sorensen signed for Carlisle on a season-long loan deal in August but has started one of a possible 11 games for his temporary employers and remained an unused substitute in five of those.

Last month, some Newcastle fans on Twitter expressed frustration at the 20-year-old’s lack of action, having seen him score freely for the Magpies’ youth sides.

But the Carlisle manager Steven Pressley later told the Cumbrians’ official website: “Part of a young player’s development is coming out to a team and having to fight for your place.

“That’s real football, and part of their development. Steve Bruce and the Newcastle staff will understand – this is a big part of his development.”

And with only eight senior minutes to his name since then, Sorensen’s fight continued with Carlisle’s second string against Glasgow Rangers.

Positively, the Dane scored the opening goal in a 2-1 win for his side at Rangers’ Hummel Training Centre.

But it remains to be seen whether that will be enough to get him out on the pitch against Crewe Alexandra this coming Saturday.
