Newcastle United’s Gayle is the Championship’s top scorer so far but drew a blank against Wolverhampton Wanderers in September.
Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle is the Championship’s top scorers this season, but one of the few teams he has not found the net against is Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Wolves shocked the league leaders with a 2-0 win at St. James’ Park in September, and it is perhaps no surprise therefore that Gayle has named one of the Black Country club’s defenders as his toughest opponent so far.
Speaking to Sky Sports’ EFL Weekly podcast, the £10 million summer signing said: “I’d probably go with (Dominic) Iorfa at Wolves. He’s got a lot of good attributes and I thought they was good that day.”

Only three points separated the two team back then, but they have since gone in contrasting directions, with Newcastle top of the table ahead of Brighton’s clash with Leeds United on Friday, and Wolves only two points above the bottom three in 20th position.
Astonishingly, Wolves went 10 games without a win after their trip to the north east and have kept only one clean sheet since then.
As such, new boss Paul Lambert is being tipped to add to his defensive ranks in the upcoming transfer window, with former Molineux man Joleon Lescott linked by the Sunday People.
Gayle will have another opportunity to score against Wolves when Newcastle travel to the west Midlands in February.
