However, Mike Ashley acted quickly to secure manager Benitez to a long term contract, securing his services for their season in the lower division, which the Toon Army were delighted by.

Benitez wasted no time in strengthening his side over the summer, signing 11 players, including Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie, Ciaran Clark and Mo Diame.
