When Ivan Toney left Newcastle United for Peterborough United back in 2018, there were very few complaints at St. James’ Park.
Toney had spent three years at Newcastle but rarely threatened to make the grade on Tyneside, after a series of loan spells around the lower leagues.
In the end Newcastle accepted a bid of £500,000 (Peterborough Evening Telegraph) from Posh and sent Toney on his way to London Road, with very little fuss.
At the time the decision caused little controversy – but since moving to Posh, Toney has made Newcastle’s sale of him look like a terrible piece of business.
Toney’s value has already increased eight-fold since he moved to Peterborough, with Darren Ferguson’s side swatting away a £4 million bid from Charlton Athletic for the striker this summer, according to chairman Darragh MacAnthony.
Toney has bludgeoned his way past League One defenders with ease, and the 23-year-old is arguably the finest striker at that level.
Newcastle may now be starting to regret their choice to sell Toney so cheaply, as his value could be set to rise even further with another strong campaign behind him.
Toney has four goals for Peterborough in six League One appearances this season, and sits among the top scorers in the league.
If the 23-year-old keeps his performances up throughout the campaign, his value could be set to sky rocket, especially if he earns Peterborough promotion to the Championship.
And even though Toney may not have been good enough to make the grade at Newcastle, it is becoming abundantly clear that a player of his talent is worth far more than what the Magpies got for him.
