Speaking to The Washington Post, Newcastle United’s DeAndre Yedlin has opened up on his decision to join the club, having previously played for North-East rivals Sunderland.

The United States full-back signed a five-year deal for Newcastle last summer after leaving Tottenham Hotspur in a permanent move.

The 23-year-old spent the 2014-15 campaign on loan at the Magpies’ Tyne-Wear rivals Sunderland.

And although he concedes that he suffered a bit of abuse from the Black Cats faithful on Twitter after joining Rafael Benitez’s side, Yedlin says that he does not get bothered by their supporters out in public – except for one occasional question.

He told The Washington Post of the abuse: ““It was mostly on social media.

“I’d see Sunderland fans in the streets; they haven’t been bad to me. There will be the occasional fan asking why I would go to Newcastle. I don’t expect them to understand. It’s my career and I had to make a choice.”

It proved a good choice as Yedlin played 27 Championship games and helped Newcastle win promotion back to the Premier League, and won the title on the last day.

Sunderland were relegated under now-sacked manager David Moyes, which means that there will be no league fixture between the North-East giants again this season.
