Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle United side came through in the FA Cup against Blackburn Rovers last night.
Roberts has been waiting for his first-team chance all season, and Newcastle finally allowed him to start at Ewood Park.
The youngster ended up seizing his opportunity, as he scored in Newcastle’s 4-2 win, and Benitez’s advice was key.
Roberts managed to beat the Blackburn defence to the ball after a Jacob Murphy cross, and he finished well to put Newcastle into a 2-0 lead in the first half.
“The gaffer told me before the game that I had to get across the front post and I just took a chance,” Roberts said.
“Jacob Murphy put the ball in for me and it fell perfectly for me.”
Whether Roberts’ goal will now force him into Benitez’s plans at St. James’ Park remains to be seen.
The Newcastle boss has seemingly had reservations over using Roberts during his time at the club so far, despite his impressive performances at development squad level.
Newcastle are next in action at the weekend when they take on Cardiff City at home.
