According to a report in the Daily Record, Newcastle United want to sign Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths in January and he could have been an ideal option for them right now.

Newcastle knew they needed a striker in the summer transfer window, but Rafael Benitez only had a limited budget to do business on.

In the end, Benitez turned to Joselu – but the signing of the target-man from Stoke City hasn’t been a total success.

Although Joselu has come straight into Newcastle’s first-team, he looks far from a prolific scorer.

The Spaniard has just two goals to his name for the Magpies, and it seems that Griffiths would have been a better option.

Griffiths has found the back of the net eight times for Celtic already this season and has also contributed eight assists.

Although Griffiths would be playing at a higher level if he was to move to England, his tireless work-rate and clinical finishing could have been an effective mix of skills for Newcastle.

And the Magpies may now be regretting not pushing harder to sign the Celtic man during the previous transfer window now.
