Newcastle urged to secure transfer of England star over Everton’s Anthony Gordon

Ally McCoist says Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are better off ‘paying an extra few quid’ for Leicester City midfielder James Maddison than signing Everton winger, Anthony Gordon, for ‘£60 million’ during the January transfer window, as he told talkSPORT Breakfast (26/01/23).

Everton are without a manager and, following Frank Lampard’s sacking, everything seems to be unravelling, including claims that Gordon could head for the Goodison Park exit door before the January transfer window slams shut.

Champions League-chasing Newcastle have expressed interest in Gordon before, and given the current goings-on at the club, they are looking to pounce on the situation on Merseyside to sign the boyhood Toffees fan.

It seems as though Everton are open to selling the player this month, but the Magpies aren’t willing to pay the £60 million being put on the table for the England U21 international.

That’s perhaps understandable given that Gordon hasn’t scored since October, only has three goals to his name this term and is yet to register an assist.

As a result, former Scotland international McCoist feels that Howe should go to the senior ranks of English football and put that sort of money down for Maddison.

“I think that fee (£60 million) is far too much for Anthony Gordon,” said McCoist. “The Leicester fans won’t thank me for saying it, but surely you are better off paying an extra few quid and getting somebody like James Maddison?!”

NEWCASTLE SHOULDN’T SIGN GORDON

There is more hype than real-quality performances attached to Gordon. Yes, it’s understandable why Newcastle would want him and why they would go for him now.

He is still 21, and they might feel they could pounce on a situation where Everton are pretty fragile.

But, at the end of the day, players like Maddison are better off being brought in now, rather than Gordon.

Plus, is the winger better than what Howe has to pick from right now? Not Miguel Almiron and not Allan Saint-Maximin, who now finds himself on the bench.
