Newcastle United are pushing to make Villarreal boss Unai Emery their new manager with Lucien Favre believed to be out of the running.
That’s according to a report from German outlet Sport1, who claim that Emery now the favourite to replace Steve Bruce at St James’ Park.
Newcastle are pushing for an agreement and are ready to pay the necessary compensation to lure him away from Villarreal.
Newcastle want to announce their new manager next week, meaning they are now trying to get a deal for Emery done quickly.
The report adds that Newcastle had also considered a move for Lucien Favre, who last managed Borussia Dortmund.
However, the Swiss coach is now claimed to be out of the running for unknown reasons.
Newcastle target Emery may have unfinished business in England
The Northern Echo reported last month that Emery was willing to jump ship and leave Villarreal for Newcastle.
The Spaniard took over at Arsenal back in 2018, but lasted less than 18 months in the job.
Emery did take Arsenal to the Europa League final but ultimately didn’t have enough time to really show his quality.
Emery went and won the Europa League once again last season, with his Villarreal success making it four Europa League trophies to his name.
That record prompted Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel to brand Emery ‘incredible’, even if many Premier League fans haven’t really seen it.
Taking over this dismal Newcastle side could be a risk for Emery, but he may want to prove many in England wrong by becoming a Premier League success.
