Newcastle United may end up missing out on Stoke City striker Tyrese Campbell with Burnley now considering making a bid this month.

The Sunday Mirror (16/01, p65) report that Burnley are keen to sign Campbell during the January transfer window.

Sean Dyche has allegedly identified Campbell as the striker he wants to bring to Burnley after showing promise at Stoke.

Stoke won’t sell easily given their play-off aspirations, but Burnley do have money in the bank after selling Chris Wood.

The Clarets were left stunned last week when Newcastle paid Wood’s release clause and lured him to St James’ Park.

That has left Burnley with an enormous hole to fill in attack, having seen Wood score double figures in each of his Premier League seasons with the club.

Campbell could be the man, though it would come with some risk given that he hasn’t played above the Championship yet.

The 22-year-old has bounced back from a major knee injury to get back on track this season, scoring twice in 12 Championship games.

Campbell scored nine times in the 2019-20 campaign and was on course for a great season last term, scoring six in 16 games before his injury.

The son of former Everton and Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell, Tyrese has plenty of pace and can play up front or out wide.

Campbell would bring something completely different to Wood in the Burnley attack, and this move may ironically leave Newcastle gutted.

The Sun reported in December that Newcastle wanted to spend £20million on bringing Campbell to Tyneside.

The plan seems to be adding an experienced striker in Wood alongside an exciting young striker – just like Campbell.

Wood cost Newcastle £25million, and Burnley could now use that money to go and win the race for Campbell.

It’s funny how the transfer market works sometimes.
