A round up of Newcastle United transfer stories from the past 24 hours.

Olarenwaju Kayode chose Manchester City over Newcastle United due to a combination of the Magpies’ overconfidence and Rafa Benitez’s failure to convince him as much as Pep Guardiola, according to an Own Goal Nigeria source.

Newcastle were linked with a move for the Austria Wien striker last week, but he is now claimed to have signed a four-year deal at City, who will loan him out to Girona this season.

The source is quoted as saying: “The conversation (with City) didn’t last beyond 30 minutes. Guardiola told him how he will integrate him into his team in the nearest future, and assured him he will get his chance with the team soon.

“Guardiola made it known to him that he fits into his style of play, and the move to Spain where he will join Girona on loan is so because he isn’t eligible for a work permit yet.

“I will say Newcastle United were too confident of their chances of landing him, and manager Rafa Benitez didn’t sound convincing as much as Guardiola when he spoke with Kayode.”

Newcastle can, however, expect another striker’s arrival on Tyneside fairly shortly, after Sky Sports reported that Joselu has passed a medical and agreed personal terms ahead of a £5 million move from Stoke City.

And they’re in with a chance of landing a new goalkeeper, too, after the agent of Orestis Karnezis told Calcio Napoli 24 his client is bound for England.

Vasileios Panagiotakis said: “Karnezis will play in England for one (of) Watford, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace.

“The Napoli option is now definitively off the table.”

The Magpies are also being linked with a move for Birmingham City’s back-up goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak by Talksport, while El Desmarque reports Tim Krul has been offered to Deportivo La Coruna.

Deportivo have been strongly tipped to re-sign Newcastle target Lucas Perez from Arsenal this summer, although according to The London Evening Standard, the Galician side do not intend to up their offer of £11 million.

But Depor could perhaps be more inclined to meet Arsenal’s £13.4 million asking price if they lose Florin Andone, who Sky Sports reports is the subject of an £11.8 million bid from Burnley.

The Clarets have also made an improved bid of £10 million for Hull City’s Sam Clucas – another alleged Benitez target – although this was unsuccessful, according to BBC Sport.
