Tottenham Hotspur have been eyeing up Sven Botman and Diego Carlos – but the duo have been tempted by Newcastle United because of Kieran Trippier.
That’s according to The Athletic, who claim that both Botman and Diego Carlos were interested in January moves to Newcastle.
One of the key reasons for their stances was Trippier, who had joined Newcastle earlier in the January window.
It’s stated that seeing a proven Champions League player in Trippier join Newcastle was very convincing to the duo.
With Newcastle facing a relegation battle this season, attracting quality players was always going to be tricky.
Yet with Trippier brought in as the flagship signing, it seems that Newcastle have made themselves appealing to other top-tier players.
Newcastle offered around £30million for Botman, but Lille just wouldn’t sell their star Dutchman in January.
Lille face a big Champions League meeting with Chelsea and didn’t want to go into such a key game without Botman.
Newcastle may want to try again in the summer, with Botman possessing huge potential to become one of the top defenders in Europe.
As for Diego Carlos, the Sevilla man wanted to join Newcastle but the two teams couldn’t agree a fee, leaving the Brazilian to stay in Spain.

An experienced defender at almost 29, Diego Carlos is one of Spain’s top defenders and Newcastle are expected to make a new move this summer.
With Trippier on board, Newcastle will believe they can sign both players – and that may leave Tottenham a little disappointed.
The Telegraph claim that Tottenham fancy Botman, whilst the Daily Mail report that Spurs also fancy Diego Carlos.
It sounds like both players actually fancy Newcastle with Trippier – a former Tottenham player, ironically – believed to be a big selling point.
Tottenham are still a major attraction themselves, but Newcastle’s project is seemingly turning heads in Europe.
