Will Newcastle United sign a goalkeeper during the January transfer window?
Nick Pope’s long-term injury has certainly thrown a spanner in the works for Eddie Howe and pushed him to possibly make a big call sooner rather than later.
Martin Dubravka is the man who will take the number one gloves for Newcastle United, at this moment in time – with Ally McCoist making his feelings clear.
But there is talk that free-agent David de Gea, after leaving Manchester United in the summer, could be a possible option for the team – Jacob Murphy admitted last season that they ‘deliberately targeted’ the 33-year-old during his struggles at Old Trafford.
Whilst journalist Craig Hope stated that there is a possibility of David de Gea coming in, he added that ‘Eddie Howe won’t like’ talk of the Spanish star signing, as he told talkSPORT.
Of course, if Newcastle wished, they could sign David de Gea tomorrow, but until then, the floor is Martin Dubravka’s to regain his number-one goalkeeping spot.
Will Newcastle United sign David de Gea?
“The January window is just around the corner,” said Hope. “And there is a goalkeeper sat there in Spain doing nothing, so Newcastle will be crazy not to be looking at that.
“Is it imminent? Are they talking to him now? No. Is there a possibility down the line? Yes.
“I read somewhere that de Gea might have to take a drop in wages, well, currently he is earning 0 pounds, so I think he will absolutely jump at the chance.
“Eddie won’t like this talk of de Gea. He is so loyal to his players, especially his goalkeepers as well, with it being a specialist position. He won’t like this noise. He will be telling Martin Dubravka first thing this morning ‘you are my number one. The jersey is yours, go and prove you are worth it’.”

Nick Pope is an underrated player for Newcastle United
It beggars belief that Gareth Southgate has dropped Pope from his England squad in recent times because it simply isn’t deserving.
The 31-year-old, following his transfer to St James’ Park in 2022, has been one of his side’s best players and a key reason why they are playing Champions League football.
That has been proven further in the Champions League and it could be argued he isn’t getting the full recognition and is underrated.
It’s a shame that he is injured for the long-term now because he will leave a big void out on the pitch.
