Clinton Morrison thinks Allan Saint-Maximin will leave Newcastle United after the club secured the January transfer of Anthony Gordon from Everton.

The former Premier League striker questioned where that leaves Saint-Maximin in Newcastle’s pecking order under Eddie Howe, as he thinks Gordon’s arrival pushes him back.

Whilst Saint-Maximin has started only four Premier League games this season, it also needs to be remembered that he has been injured during that period.

The Frenchman’s issue is that when he was on the sidelines, the Champions League-chasing side didn’t miss him at all.

In fact, players like Miguel Almiron shone as bright as the whiteness in Jack Grealish’s teeth, which made the transformed player more important than his unpredictable teammate by the time he returned.

The £17 million signing (Sky Sports) is still trying to find his rhythm, but Morrison thinks he is a goner, as he told Sky Sports News (29/01/23).

“Of course, he will leave,” said Morrison. “He’s going to see that and think ‘I’m not getting much game time’. I like Saint-Maximin. I think he is an outstanding player.

“But, at this moment in time, he’s not getting the opportunity. When you are bringing another winger like Gordon, that puts him further down the list.”

HOW FAR NEWCASTLE HAVE COME

When there was talk that there was going to be a big-money takeover at Newcastle, many automatically presumed that many players would be booted out and replaced.

From Miguel Almiron to Joelinton. Many of them were struggling. There was talk of a clear-out. Who and which players would survive if that happened?!

One name that was backed to survive a possible sea-change of players was Saint-Maximin because he was seen as the outstanding talent of the previous regime.

Yet, fast forward to the present and now Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier, Almiron, Joelinton, Sven Botman and Dan Burn are now seen as being more important players than Saint-Maximin himself.
