Newcastle United have been linked with Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans – but Brendan Rodgers thinks contract talks will accelerate soon.

Newcastle’s interest in Tielemans

When Newcastle’s huge takeover went through earlier this month, they were immediately linked with big signings.

Tielemans was one of the first players suggested, with the Daily Mail claiming that Newcastle fancy signing the Belgian.

The 24-year-old is out of contract in the summer of 2023, meaning he is heading towards the final 18 months of his deal.

Leicester may be forced to sell Tielemans if he doesn’t sign a new deal, and Newcastle could have the riches to make a deal happen.

Rodgers comments on Tielemans’ future

Leicester boss Rodgers has now commented on Tielemans with fears rising about his future.

Rodgers has told the Daily Mail that there will ‘obviously’ be talks between Leicester and Tielemans about an extension.

Rodgers added that his focus is just on developing Tielemans as a player, branding him ‘outstanding’.

There is though a real chance that Tielemans leaves Leicester in 2022, and Newcastle will be chasing a move to get him away from the King Power Stadium.

“There will obviously be talks with the club in terms of his contract but I continue to work with him and help him improve as a player. That’s my only focus,” said Rodgers.

“He is an outstanding player, one of Europe’s top midfielders. He is integral to our game and a joy to work with — a super professional. A young player with that focus is great to see,” he added.
