Newcastle United are keen on a move for Iker Casillas.

Porto´s Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas sits on the banch during the UEFA Champions League group G football match RB Leipzig v FC Porto in Leipzig, eastern Germany on October 17, 2017.

Newcastle United have been linked as a surprise landing spot for Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

The Chronicle cited Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Noticias’ report that Newcastle are keen on the Spanish World Cup winner.

Casillas would be an extravagant signing for Newcastle, and at this stage looks an unlikely one.

Porto's Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas (R) and Portuguese midfielder Danilo Pereira take part in a training session at the Olival Training Centre in Vila Nova de Gaia on October 31, 2017...

The one factor in their favour is Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez.

Casillas left Real while Benitez was manager but had no hard feelings, and admitted he felt sorry for the Spaniard after he was fired by the club after just a few months in charge.

He was quoted by The Chronicle last year: “I feel sorry for Rafa. I spoke with him in Madrid.

“He didn’t suggest I wasn’t going to play and he knew I was talking to the club about leaving. He was worried about me.”

Casillas left Real to sign with Porto, where he has racked up 93 appearances so far in three seasons but was recently dropped from the first team for a brief period in late October.

He is a five time La Liga winner and three times Champions League winner with Real Madrid, although is yet to win any medals with Porto.
