Newcastle United’s long, long wait for a takeover looks to be nearing an end – and fans are predicting a move to sign Philippe Coutinho.
The Magpies were the subject of a takeover attempt from Saudi Arabia-based Public Investment Fund some 18 months ago.
There were issues at the time that have only just been resolved, and a deal is now looking likely to go through.
The Mirror claim that Newcastle will be armed with a huge £250million to splash on new signings.
This feels very reminiscent of Manchester City’s takeover in 2008, and they marked that with one immediate coup.
Robinho joined City from Real Madrid on deadline day in 2008, instantly providing the club with a big name to kickstart the new project.
Newcastle may do the same, and names are already being thrown around on Twitter.

Fans predict Coutinho to Newcastle
One of the most popular names being touted for Newcastle is Philippe Coutinho.
There are parallels to that Robinho deal. Both highly regarded, both Brazilian, both creative, both coming in from a Spanish powerhouse.
Coutinho finds himself at Barcelona but his £146million move to the Camp Nou in 2018 really hasn’t paid off.
This January will be four years since that move, and Barcelona would no doubt love to sell.
Neutral fans have been all over Twitter predicting that Coutinho will end up joining Newcastle as their ‘Robinho-esque’ signing – and it may have some weight given that Coutinho’s agents thought Newcastle would bid whenever their takeover was done.
