Newcastle United have been long-term admirers of Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, and their impending takeover could finally allow Rafael Benitez to bring the Portuguese international to St. James’ Park.

Newcastle have had an eye on Carvalho ever since they were promoted to the Premier League, according to reports in the Chronicle.

However, Lisbon’s £39 million asking price for the 25-year-old has so far proved restrictive.

The Daily Mail say that Lisbon are now willing to accept a slightly lower fee, and if Newcastle’s takeover goes through that may mean that Benitez can finally land his man.

Newcastle put out a public statement yesterday announcing that the club was up for sale, and they were looking for a buyer who could afford to put in a significant amount of investment.

Carvalho’s arrival at St. James’ Park would certainly show any new owner’s intent and he could be a star for the Magpies.

Carvalho would bring steel and power to Newcastle’s midfield ranks, and if a takeover bid does go through before the January transfer window, he may well be on Benitez’s radar once again.
