Newcastle United are currently in a very strong position from which to gain promotion to the Premier League.

Magpies striker Dwight Gayle sat down for an interview with the Northern Echo, and explained how his persistent hamstring problems could have a psychological effect on him when he takes to the pitch, but insisted that he must forget about what could happen, and focus on scoring goals for his club during the run-in.

Newcastle currently sit top of the Championship table, with a one point lead over second placed Brighton and Hove Albion, and more importantly, a 10 point advantage over third placed Huddersfield Town.

And Gayle has been an instrumental figure for Rafa Benitez’ side, scoring 22 league goals, despite missing 10 games through injury.

The Spaniard will surely be delighted to have him back fit and firing again, as he takes his side into the business end of the season.

And Gayle spoke to the Northern Echo about how his previous injuries could affect him mentally, if he allowed them to:

“I have been injured and in and out of the team for the last few months now. For me, it was nice to get back playing against Wigan and scoring a goal. Hopefully, now I can get back to playing well and repay the team before the end of the season. When it comes to hamstring injuries, you have to get it right. For me, you have to go out there and forget about it. If it goes, it’s not the best, but you just have to try your best out there. Hopefully, now I have overcome it. I want to play for the rest of the season and score more goals.”

The Tyneside outfit play host to Burton Albion tomorrow night, before making the trip to Yorkshire to take on seventh placed Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, and a return of six points from those outings will go a long way to securing their place inside the automatic promotion spots come the end of the season.
