Newcastle United can jump back to the top of the Championship with a win tonight.
Newcastle United’s Jack Colback
Magpies midfielder Jack Colback spoke to the Northern Echo about his side’s promotion hopes, and admitted that he is becoming irritated by the form of the teams in and around them in the Championship table.
Rafa Benitez’ men currently sit in second position in the table, but they have a chance to jump back to the top of the pile when they welcome a struggling Aston Villa side to St James’ Park tonight.
And Newcastle will be confident of winning the game, as they head into the match on the back of a fine run of form, having not lost a league game since January 2nd.
The Tynesider’s lead over third placed huddersfield Town has now been cut to just five points, however, after a superb run of victories by the Terriers.
And Colback drew attention to how well the other teams have been performing inside the top six of late, when speaking to the Northern Echo, but insisted that he and his teammates must purely focus on their own games:
“It’s getting irritating now actually. They (Newcastle’s promotion rivals) are part of the competition, so of course you’re going to have a look at the other results after games. We obviously focus on ourselves first, but the gap to third and fourth was a bit more healthy a while ago, and the other teams have closed that gap.”
Newcastle United’s Jack Colback in action
The 27-year-old midfielder will have more of a key role to play in his side’s schedule over the next month or so, after fellow midfielder Isaac Hayden was ruled out for up to a month with an ankle injury.
And it is because of that kind of squad depth why so many people believe that Newcastle are nailed on for not only promotion, but to win the Championship title.
