Magpies midfielder Mo Diame spoke wth the Northern Echo ahead of his side’s game against Bristol City at the weekend, and highlighted how something that Rafa Benitez told him and the squad at the start of the season will be particularly pertinent on Saturday when they welcome the Robins to St James’ Park.
Newcastle have been on a wonderful run of form of late, and currently sit at the top of the Championship table, with a one point lead over second placed Brighton & Hove Albion – who they face up against on Tuesday night at the Amex Stadium.
Before that though, Benitez’ men must ensure they are 100 per cent focused on the challenge they face against Lee Johnson’s side at the weekend.
And Diame, who made the move to Tyneside from Hull City in the summer of 2016, spoke to the Northern Echo, sharing something that his manager told the squad during a meeting at the start of their campaign:
“You have to be prepared to fight. That is what the league asks of you. When we started the season, the manager had a meeting with us and told us that we would not be able to play football every week and win easily. He said this would be hard, so we knew it would be a battle.”

Newcastle have not lost a Championship game since January 2nd, and if they can keep up their points to games ratio, they will reach 100 points by the end of the season.
A total that has never failed to ensure promotion to the top flight since two spots were designated for automatic entry to the Premier League and or the old First Division.
And six points from their next two games would go a long way to securing their Premier League status for next term.
