Magpies midfielder Jonjo Shelvey spoke to BBC Radio Newcastle last night, and shared the one area of his game that he feels has held him back in the past – his fitness.

But the 25-year-old now feels in the best shape he has ever been, as he looks to help guide his Newcastle side back to the Premier League.

Rafa Benitez’ men are currently sitting second in the Championship table, and face a crucial game tonight against league leaders Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium, where a win could take them back to the summit.

And Shelvey explained how, whilst he has always had faith in his technical ability, his fitness has been something that hasn’t quite been up to scratch, when speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle:

“I’m playing well. I’m the fittest I’ve been. It’s standing me in good stead. I’ve always had the technical ability, but it’s always been my fitness. Now I feel I’m benefitting from the way my body is.”

The former Liverpool man has scored four goals and chipped in with seven assists in 29 Championship appearances for the Tyneside outfit so far this term, but it is his overall influence on his team, and the manner in which he can control the game from deep which has been so impressive since his return from suspension.

And if Benitez’ men are to secure promotion to the promised land, they will need Shelvey to be at his very best for the remainder of their campaign.
