Newcastle United star Jonjo Shelvey is letting down fans who pleaded his case over Spurs hero

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey disappointed at the weekend.

Newcastle United fans expressed their annoyance back in October that Jonjo Shelvey was snubbed for an England call.

The Chronicle reported an outcry of messages when Shelvey was overlooked in favour of Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks, running the fan inspired headline ‘There’s no way Winks is better than Shelvey’.

Winks more than justified his selection for the Three Lions, and has gone onto excel for his club home and away against Real Madrid.

Shelvey on the other hand remains as unpredictable as ever.

Newcastle fans can’t be blamed for backing their player, who performed so well in the Championship last season.

But in the Premier League he cannot escape the inconsistency which has beset his entire career so far.

This was once again evident at the weekend as he was out-duelled by an impressive Watford midfield at St James Park.

This season Shelvey has more red cards (1) than he does goals and assists combined (0).

Against Watford he landed both of his shots off target, failed to create a chance, and was booked for his troubles.

Shelvey’s World Cup dream was already a bit of a pipe dream, but if his form does not pick up, then it’s as good as over.

Perhaps a carrot of encouragement from Gareth Southgate would be just what he needs, but he has to earn it and at present he is letting down the fans who pleaded his case.
