The striker has struggled to perform consistently since joining Newcastle.

The January transfer window is rapidly approaching and one player who could be interested in leaving Newcastle United is Aleksandar Mitrovic, with the striker having been used sparingly so far this season.

Now in his third season at the club, Mitrovic has played just 113 minutes in the Premier League this season and it is perhaps best for both parties if he is to be allowed to leave.

Should Newcastle lose Mitrovic it wouldn’t represent a major blow for Rafael Benitez’s side, despite the club’s lack of goals this season.

Although the Serbian came with quite a reputation when he joined from Anderlecht, he has found it very difficult to live up to the hype and has struggled to perform consistently.

Given that he is only 23 years old, Mitrovic still has time to develop and become more consistent, but Newcastle are attempting to re-establish themselves as a club that is established in the Premier League and they can ill afford to carry any passengers.

Aleksandar Mitrovic arrives prior to the Premier League match between Newcastle United and AFC Bournemouth at St. James Park on November 4, 2017 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

Mitrovic has had his moments at Newcastle but ultimately has mustered just 17 goals in 69 appearances for the club across all competitions.

It isn’t just his goalscoring return which is a concern with Mitrovic, however, as disciplinary issues have continued throughout his spell on Tyneside, while his overall performances often leave much to be desired and he can often be seen to have very little impact in games.

If Newcastle can bring in a cheap but effective back-up striking alternative from elsewhere, then Mitrovic’s potential departure really shouldn’t negatively impact the club at all.
