Newcastle United should try to sign Pepe Reina from Napoli in the summer transfer window.

Pepe Reina

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez wants to sign Pepe Reina from Napoli in the summer transfer window.

Former Real Madrid head coach Benitez worked with Reina at Liverpool and knows the Spain international goalkeeper very well.

However, it has been reported that Napoli’s demand of a £5 million transfer fee for the former Barcelona man is deemed too high for Newcastle as he is 34 years of age.

True, Reina will be 35 in August, but there can be no doubt that the former Liverpool goalkeeper is a superb player who is going to enhance the quality of the current Newcastle team.

The Spaniard made 37 Serie A appearances for Napoli last season, helping them finish third in Serie A, and he still has at least two more years left in him at the highest level.

If Napoli want only £5m for Reina and the player himself is open to the idea of working with Benitez, then Newcastle should cough up the cash.

The former Villarreal goalkeeper is better than any of the custodians that Newcastle have on their books at the moment, and not signing a player of Reina’s quality for just £5m would be a massive transfer mistake from the Magpies.
