Newcastle United are known to be on the look out for a new central midfielder this summer.

According to a report in the Telegraph, Watford are negotiating with Chelsea over a permanent deal for Nathaniel Chalobah.

Initially it was expected that Chalobah would leave Chelsea on loan, but it seems Watford are confident of getting him on a long-term basis.

And that news should make the transfer even more appealing for Newcastle United.

England's Nathaniel Chalobah

Newcastle are known to be on the hunt for a new central midfielder this summer, and Chalobah could be a great addition.

The England youth international is still only 22, and looks to have masses of potential.

Chalobah is highly regarded at Chelsea, but is eager to get first-team football at this stage of his career, and the London club may now be forced to cash in.

Chalobah could offer Newcastle creativity and power in the middle of the pitch, and he would significantly strengthen Benitez’s current options at St. James’ Park.

At first it seemed that a loan move was Newcastle’s most likely route to getting Chalobah, and there would have been some value in that.

Chalobah would have been a good option for Newcastle to have for one season, but to keep him on a longer-term basis makes the potential transfer look even better.

However, if Newcastle are not to miss out they will have to move quickly, as Watford are ahead of them in the race for the talented prospect, as things stand.
