If £9m is all Arsenal want for Jack Wilshere, then Newcastle United should make a move for the Gunners midfielder in the summer transfer window.

Jonjo Shelvey is a good midfielder and remains an important player for Newcastle United, but for the Magpies to challenge for a top-10 finish in the Premier League next season, they need someone better.

Shelvey has proven to be inconsistent and can blow hot and cold, and it would make sense for Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez to look for a similar midfielder who can push the 25-year-old harder or play alongside him, and perhaps even replace him in the starting lineup.

Jack Wilshere could be that midfielder. True, the Arsenal man has had injury problems in his career, but during his loan spell at Bournemouth last season, the 25-year-old proved that he can succeed if he stays fit.

The England international’s spell at Bournemouth last season was affected by injuries, but when he was fit and was playing, the midfielder did look good.

Arsenal have enough good midfielders in their team and Wilshere would struggle to play regularly at the Emirates Stadium next season, and Newcastle should make a move for the Englishman in the summer transfer window.

The Sun claimed last week that Arsenal were ready to sell Wilshere for just £9 million. For that amount of money, Newcastle simply cannot afford not to sign the 25-year-old who would be a stunning addition to Benitez’s side.

Blessed with the ability to run with the ball from deep, pick out superb passes and break down opposition’s defences, Wilshere would make Newcastle a brilliant team and add something different to their midfield.

True, the Arsenal midfielder would remain an injury-risk, but if he costs just £9m, then he would be worth the risk.

However, if Arsenal have raised their asking price to £20m, as The Daily Star has claimed they have, then Newcastle should not bother.
