Newcastle United would be wise to profit from Southampton’s relegation, if Mark Hughes’ side do get relegated.

Newcastle United should be making plans to pinch Ryan Bertrand from Southampton, if Mark Hughes’ side are relegated.

Southampton are one of the favourites for the drop in the Premier League, after their heavy defeat to West Ham United last weekend.

And if the Saints do drop into the Championship, they will surely be raided for some of their top talent.

Ryan Bertrand of Southampton takes a throw in during the Premier League match between Stoke City and Southampton at Bet365 Stadium on September 30, 2017 in Stoke on Trent, England.

Bertrand is a player of genuine Premier League quality, and Newcastle should already have their eyes on the left-back.

The Magpies currently have Paul Dummett starting in the position, and while the Welsh defender is a solid option, he is not anywhere near the quality of Bertrand.

Ryan Bertrand of Southampton tackles Joe Allen of Stoke City during the Premier League match between Southampton and Stoke City at St Mary's Stadium on May 21, 2017 in Southampton, England.

Bertrand is excellent going forward, but he also is a hard-worker defensively, and looks likely to go to the World Cup with England this summer.

If Newcastle could bring him to St. James’ Park, it would be a significant upgrade on what they already have in the position, and it would really announce their ambition ahead of the new campaign.
