Should Newcastle United move for the Tottenham Hotspur man, who could be available soon?

According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are set to make Paolo Gazzaniga their first signing of what has been a very quiet window for manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The report claims that Tottenham will spend £2 million on the Southampton goalkeeper in an arrival which could push Michel Vorm toward the exit door at Spurs.

And if it does, Newcastle United should seriously consider swooping for the 33-year-old.

Michel Vorm of Tottenham Hotspur looks dejected during the Premier League match between Sunderland and Tottenham Hotspur at Stadium of Light on January 31, 2017 in Sunderland, England.

Due to Hugo Lloris’s presence in North London, Vorm hasn’t played much football in recent seasons but it should not be forgotten that the Dutchman arrived as a very decent keeper in 2014 and he most probably still is one.

At 33, the former Swansea man is no spring chicken, but he certainly isn’t in the twilight of a career which could easily span another four or five years.

In an ideal world, Newcastle fans would be given Pepe Reina or somebody of that ilk as a reward for their patience, with Rafael Benitez yet to sign a keeper despite being linked to Joe Hart, Darren Randolph and Adrian earlier in the transfer window.

But it’s not an ideal world and there isn’t much to suggest that Vorm doesn’t have anything to offer a Premier League side any longer. Sure, he wouldn’t cause a great deal of excitement, but he would be a good short-term option, a stop-gap until Benitez finds somebody better.

The Magpies, at the moment, seem to be treading water in their search for a keeper, a delay which has a knock-on effect for the futures of Karl Darlow and Tim Krul.

The Tottenham man, valued at around £3.5 million according to Transfermarkt, would see them through until next summer, or January, until Benitez has a clearer idea of who he wants for that role in the long term.
