Kieran Gibbs proved his class in West Bromwich Albion’s 2-2 draw with Watford at The Hawthorns on Saturday.
The former Arsenal left-back joined West Brom in a £7 million deal this past summer and, at the moment, it is looking like an excellent bit of business.
But should Newcastle United be kicking themselves that they didn’t move quicker?
According to The Mirror, Newcastle were interested in the England international after the Gunners almost halved their valuation from £15 million to £8 million.
But Magpies boss Rafael Benitez elected against coughing up that sum and it’s now looking like something of an error by the Spaniard.
Jesus Gamez and centre-back Chancel Mbemba have been deployed at left-back and have done alright in Paul Dummett’s absence but ideally the 28-year-old would have been a much better, reliable and safer option than those two long term.
Benitez had his hands tied for much of the summer transfer window due to a lack of financial backing from owner Mike Ashley, but £8 million would not have broken the bank; not when they spent an average of £7 million per player.
For now, the West Brom man looks like one that got away for Newcastle.
