It would be fair to say that Newcastle United’s transfer window was not universally well received by fans at St James ‘ Park. The never-ending hunt for a new striker appeared to go on forever. In the end they failed to bring in Nicolai Jorgensen and Daniel Sturridge but eventually did scrape together a last minute loan deal for out of favour Leicester City striker Islam Slimani.
Newcastle fans were still left wondering why the club did not do more in this area.

So what transfer, that did happen in January, should Newcastle realistically have also been in the race for?
One player that springs to mind is Canadian striker Cyle Larin.
It was way back in October when the impressive frontman informed Orlando City and the public of his wish to head to Europe in the New Year.
In the end he got his move, making a switch to Besiktas for a fee reported to be in the region of £1.6 million by transfermarkt.

That is a bargain for a striker of Larin’s natural potential, and one Newcastle should have been in the running for. The 22-year-old striker is a fast and powerful front option who has a good scoring record – netting 44 goals in 89 games for the Florida side.
Newcastle should have been taking an interest in the player as he would be a signing for the future with the potential to score plenty of goals in the English game, given his style of play.
At £1.6 million he was also an absolute bargain and was a perfect target they simply were never in the race for.
