And missing out on the Portuguese international must be treated as a disappointment for Benitez.
If Martins arrived at St. James’ Park, Newcastle would have had the pace down their right-hand side to terrify opposition teams.
With Yedlin potentially overlapping Martins, very few defenders would have been able to keep up with the rapid pair.
And Newcastle will be hard pressed to find a better potential addition than Martins would have been over the rest of the month.
