Newcastle United are said to be working on a deal to sign Watford striker Troy Deeney.

According to ESPN, Newcastle United are set to make a move for Watford’s Troy Deeney in the coming weeks, but there has to be questions marks over whether he is an upgrade on what they already have.
Deeney could be made available by Watford this month, but the 29-year-old’s struggles this season hardly offer encouragement that he would hit the ground running at Newcastle.
The Magpies are desperate for a new striker, but bringing in Deeney would be far from guaranteed to be a hit.

Deeney has just two goals this season – which means his total is exactly the same as Aleksandar Mitrovic’s.
Mitrovic may not be well liked by Rafael Benitez, but the Spanish boss should note that the Serbian has scored as many goals as Deeney in considerably fewer minutes.

Mitrovic is also six years Deeney’s junior, and has far more room to develop than the Watford man.
And although Newcastle may want a striker, Benitez would be wise to be more selective with his targets, rather than moving for Deeney, whose form this season gives no confidence that he would be a success at St. James’ Park.
