The Arsenal ace could be deemed surplus to requirements in North London next season, so should Newcastle United ask about him?
The long-term future of Alex Iwobi is up for debate amid speculation linking Arsenal with moves for Thomas Lemar and Riyad Mahrez.
Should both arrive, the Gunners would have six wingers on their books – Lemar, Mahrez, Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Iwobi – and such company is ominous for the 21-year-old.
He has shown tremendous potential over the past 18 months, but a loan away from North London might be his best bet next season for regular football – and if Arsene Wenger is willing to let him go, Newcastle United should be first in line.
Newcastle are said to be in the market for a winger and although the Nigeria international would struggle for regular games at Arsenal, that would not be the case at St James’s Park.
Rafael Benitez has been linked with moves for Nicolas Pepe but, worth a reported £15 million according to The Independent, the Spanish manager should keep looking.
Iwobi has five goals and five assists in 26 Premier League starts for Arsenal. It is not brilliant, but it is very encouraging and Benitez has the man-management skills needed to help bring him on a little bit more than Wenger could next season.
Reality is, he isn’t good enough at the moment to be starting every week for a Premier League title-challenging team, but a full season in the top flight could do wonders for his development and Wenger should offer him to the Magpies on loan.
It’s a good move for all concerned.
