Newcastle United are confident of signing Diego Carlos from Sevilla in the January transfer window, according to 90min.

The report has claimed that Newcastle have been in talks with Sevilla central defender Carlos since the beginning of January.

The Premier League club are reportedly ‘confident’ of getting a deal done this month.

Newcastle are now pushing for a transfer deal for Carlos to be done, with the report claiming that the 28-year-old Brazilian central defender himself is open to a move to St. James’ Park.

90min reported over the weekend that Newcastle are ready to pay Carlos over £100,000 per week as salary.

Diego Carlos to Newcastle would be a statement signing

In our view, if Newcastle are able to secure the services of Carlos in the January transfer window, then it would be a statement signing from them.

Newcastle are in real danger of getting relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season.

Sevilla are challenging Real Madrid for the La Liga title.

The Spanish club are also regulars in the Champions League.

So, in our opinion, signing a first-team regular from Sevilla in the middle of the season would be quite a statement from Newcastle.

The Brazilian central defender has scored two goals in 19 La Liga matches and has also played six times in the Champions League so far this season.

Carlos made 32 starts and one substitute appearance in La Liga and played eight times in the Champions League for Sevilla last season.
